Tom's Log of the Main Salmon Raft Trip June 23
thru 29, 2016
This was a great river trip with a good group of people, nice
weather, good cooking, everyone chipped in to help on all the tasks,
got going early in the morning and on the river, Holly brought a
paddle raft and guided everyone thru the rapids with added guitar
and singing in the evening, Byron and Rick brought a lot of
community equipment and good experience from other Salmon trips, Tim
did his usual good job as trip leader, Jim and Evie brought a lot of
kitchen items and other equipment for 13 people and brought the 30
year old Achilles bucket raft and frame up from New Mexico, we had
quite the armada: 18' cataraft, 16' cataraft, 14' Achilles bucket
raft, 13' Sea Rider bucket raft, 13' self bailer paddle raft, a
double IK and 2 single IKs.
Tuesday 6/21 Drove from Salem to Tri-cities after work and slept at
Tim's place.
Wednesday 6/22 Tim made oatmeal for breakfast, drove to Riggins with
Tim, Janet and Holly in my Subaru, left at 6:45, stopped at bakery
in Dayton, got to the Back Eddy's restaurant for 12:45 lunch, met
jet boat with our gear at 3pm, 9 of us took the jet boat for the 2
hour and 35 minute ride 78 miles from Vinegar Creek, scouted the
major rapids on the way up, Byron and Rick drove Byron's truck and
Rick's trailer (having it shuttled back to Carey Creek) to put-in at
Corn Creek, Jim and Evie (and Gayle too) met us at the put-in after
driving up from New Mexico, started rigging the 3 rafts and 3 IKs at
6, we packed the coolers and then the food and kitchen boxes until
11
Thursday 6/23 Rick and Byron rigged their catarafts, met with the
ranger at 9, showed us what poison oak looks like (it was all over
the whole way down the river), checked our permits, decided who got
the reserved campsites (we only got one, our first campsite),
finished rigging the boats, left at 11:30 and got to camp at 3:30
Mile 12.9 Upper Devils Teeth, Achillies raft had a flat tube so Tim
and Tom patched it, steak and salmon for dinner
Friday 6/24 Got off at 8:40, stopped for 3 hour hike up Prospect
Ridge at Mile 17.3 1900 feet, very windy and cool so we stopped
early around 2 at Corey Bar Mile 19.6, had to patch raft again but
this time it held, 3 bean chili for dinner
Saturday 6/25 Left at 8:45, ran first major rapids Black Creek
Rapids, Tom, Jim and Evie did the right run while everyone else did
the left run, stopped at hot springs tub at Mile 22.4, went by Barth
Hot Springs coming right into river, stopped early again at Upper
Allison Ranch Mile 33.3, another group (from Utah) stopped and said
they thought they had that campsite reserved but it was not
reservable so they camped at Allison Ranch the next campsite not far
away, took a 2 mile hike on river trail to get a good view of
Allison ranch, Chicken Curry for dinner, Holly made pineapple upside
down cake in the DO
Sunday 6/26 Got going at 8:45, Terry and Berta flipped their IKs on
Split Rock Rapid, Jim and Evie flipped their IKs on Big Mallard Mile
36.9, they did not know that was a big rapid and did not scout it
like the rest of us, they tried to run right down the middle, Evie
was quite shaken up after swimming the rapid but she was ok after a
good lunch, the Utah group flipped their cataraft in this rapid and
Tim and our group helped to flip it back over, Rick and Byron ran it
on the right and the rest of us ran it on the left which is the
normal run, all the campsites were full so we just kept going until
Boise Bar Mile 50.1 which turned out to be a much nicer campsite
than any of the others, saw big horn sheep, hot dog and hamburgers
for dinner
Monday 6/27 An hour and half hike up the river trail after
breakfast, Berta and Terry flipped their IKs on Boise Bar Rapid
which had a hidden hole at the bottom, stopped by Buckskin Bill's
and got ice cream bars, had lunch at Mackay Bar (Byron asked their
permission), Tim and Tom did 6 mile 700 feet 3 1/2 hour hike up
ridge next to Warren Creek to old Romine Ranch, very hot hike, empty
cabin and barn, found a magazine there dated 1948 and saw a mommy
elk, camped at James Creek Mile 62.2, turkey chili for dinner, Bruce
made perfect biscuits in the DO
Tuesday 6/28 Got off at 8:20, stopped at the historical Polly Bemis
Ranch, very beautiful and interesting story about Polly (a freed
Chinese slave), got to camp very early Lower Bull Creek Mile 69
11:30 and it was already hot, nice campsite with shade and the creek
we could sit in our chairs to keep cool, watched a small bear across
while we ate lunch, the hiked up river trail one mile back to the
creek to cool off then down river a mile and back again to the creek
to cool off, hottest day so far, after dinner Tim and Tom hiked up
ridge 900 feet all in the shade for 2 hours, red beans and rice for
dinner, Rick and Byron did a double DO meal
Wednesday 6/29 Got up early and off by 7:45am, scouted Chittam
Rapid, Bill flipped his IK, we thought we would scout Vinegar Creek
Rapid (last major rapid) but Byron just ran it and we all followed
with no problem, got to Carey Creek take-out at 11, derigged and met
for lunch at Back Eddy's in Riggins, carried Achilles frame on top
of my Subaru, got back to tri-cities at 6:30, dropped Tim, Janet and
Holly and gear off, drove to Salem getting home a little after 11
