7/9&11-14/2025 Lasagna dinner with Aaron, Addy, Julie and Tim on the way down to IntroDucktion for Addy's orientation at University of Oregon; 42nd Annual Backpack in the Mt Zirkel Wilderness with Sully, Caty, Janet, Tim, Mark and Archer the dog; Laura's 76th birthday; Dean and Jane's 50th Wedding Anniversary Party at Lake Lure near Asheville, North Carolina with Teresa, Charles, Kirby, Tom, Elmer, Susan and Rocky so that is 11 of us from Syracuse and the Flea Bag; a lot of Hurricane Helene destruction; dinner at Rocky and Susan's house with Kirby, Tom and Elmer; Susan and Rocky cooked us a good BBQ dinner in Asheville; Sam's Knob (6,050 feet) hike 7 miles 1100 feet with Rocky; visit to Boone, Katie and Will's place in the mountains; drive to Charlottesville, Virginia to visit Joel and Catherine, good hosts, food and tour guide to James Monroe's Highlands and King Family Vineyards; next stop Washington, DC, visit and dinner with Cathy (Laura's old roommate) and Bill who we had not seen in 30 years; stayed at a nice airbnb apartment in Tysons Corner, Virginia on the 14 floor high rise; took the subway into DC to see the Library of Congress, Capitol and National Gallery of Art including the Sculpture Garden on a very hot and humid day but it was still fun; off to Salisbury, PA to visit Laura's cousin Patty, Scottie and Mike; another cousin Steve stopped by to say hello; they have 3 horses Magic, Lillie and Dream; drive back to Charlotte, NC and fly home to Oregon. Friday Backpack in 5 miles 1300 feet, lunch at Gold Lake 9,600 feet and camp at Gold Creek for 2 nights, a very nice campsite.
Saturday Sully, Mark and Tom day hike up to Red Dirt Pass 11,500 feet (9 miles 2000 feet) with Sully and Tom continue on to the Mt Zirkel peak 12,185 feet another mile; Caty, Janet, Tim and Archer day hike around the area, Tim was recovering from being sick.
Sunday Sully and Caty hike out and the rest of us continue to do the Zirkel Cricle backpacking over Circle Pass 11,000 feet, lunch at beautiful Gilpin Lake and then on to our next campsite by Gilpin Creek, another nice spot.
Monday Tom gets up early to hike out 3.5 miles and get on the road for his 17 hour drive back to Oregon; Janet and Tim hike out and head home to Boulder; Mark hikes out and heads home to San Diego. Another good backpack with good people!
5/26&31&6/1-2&4&12-16&19-22/2025 Coffin Mountain hike 6.4 miles 1600 feet, still snow and had to hike 2 miles on forest service road to get to trailhead; Addy's high school graduation weekend party with some Schneider card game with Aaron, Liz, Julie, Tim L, Janet, Tim S, Holly and Michael; Powell Butte hike 3.7 miles 500 feet with everyone then lunch at a Mexican restaurant near by; day trip to the coast with Tim and Janet hiking Cascade Head 5.2 miles 1300 feet but no sea loins on the dock at Newport; Addy's actual Ida B Wells High School graduation at Portland State Viking Pavilion on Wednesday; Addy is off to University of Oregon Honors College in the fall; Saw-Whet owl on the trail near our house; Iron Mountain and Cone Peak loop hike 6.8 miles 1900 feet; hit a deer with my 2022 Outback in the middle of nowhere (near Hot Springs, Montana) on the way to Glacier, luckily had cell reception and could get a tow to Kalispell; borrowed Bridgette's truck drove to Belly River trailhead and hiked in 6.1 miles to Belly River Ranger Station to stay with Alison for a couple nights; car is still in Kalispell being fixed with $8500 worth of damage; worked with Alison on the horse fences at the ranger station in the morning and then in the afternoon hiked 7 miles to Cosby Lake (we stayed there in 2007 on our 24th annual backpack when PT was a ranger there); rented a packraft (weighs only 7 pounds) to packraft with Alison down the the Belly River 8 miles with 4 portages to the Canadian border then hiking up to the border station; bike ride up Going-To-The-Sun highway 32 miles 3400 feet usually with Jean and Laura Cooper but Jean broke her clavicle, saw a grizzly mom bear and her cub but not too close; perfect weather all weekend in Glacier while the next weekend they got a lot of snow; dropped off Bridgette's truck (Thanks, Bridgette!) and got a ride from Neal to the Kalispell Airport since I have no car and flew home: Father Day's camping weekend (actually a week later) with Aaron, Addy, Tim (Liz was sick and stayed home with Julie), Holly and Michael near Willamette Pass in Blue Pool Campground (very nice); Salt Creek Falls and Diamond Creek Falls hike 3.5 miles 900 feet with Aaron and Tim; planning to kayak and paddleboard on Gold Lake but instead had lunch there stoking up a wood burning stove in a nice lean-to (too rainy and cold to go boating).
