hike up Borah Peak, visit with Marilyn and Ed in Lake Chelan, Washington,
hike in Mt. Rainier National Park and hike with Tim and Julie in Mt. St.
Helens park.
John's hike and trip log:
10/12 Northwest Columbus Day Week Trip, meet Tom at Portland airport, dinner with Julie at middle Eastern restaurant, drive through the night to Hailey ID; lunch at Smileys north of Galena Summit with Jeff & Jenn, stop at Sun Valley Hotel
10/13 Hailey Hills behind Jeff & Jenn's, 2100' gain, 2h45m, nice valley views, big home-cooked breakfast then evening chicken barbecue, drive to Borah Peak, van fuel line disconnect 20 miles
from trailhead, sleep by highway with 100 mooing cows in field
10/14 Repair fuel line with duct tape, add camp stove fuel, drive back 3-miles to Mackey, repaired and to trailhead by 9am, cold & windy, gain 2700' in 2hrs, turn back after half hour of 3rd class
exposure and snow at 11,500', total 6? hrs, dinner at Lincoln Inn in Gooding, drive to Baker City & Haines OR, look for Killamacue Lake

10/15 Can't find unsigned trailhead, chat with young hunters, stop
BC ranger station, drive to Blue Mtns, Willowa-Whitman NF, hike Bird Track Interpretive Trail, nice gravel trail with engraved rock
trail markers, lunch at CG, drive to Lake Chelan in the rain, arrive at
Ed & Marilyn's in Manson for great spaghetti dinner, watch Cubs lose
game 7 to Marlins
10/16 Manson walk, Dry Lake, Roses Lake, miss Wapato Lake, walk around Wapato Pt, drive to Leavenworth for great German lunch at Mozart Cafe, walk along Wenatchee R & Blackbird Island - see
spawning 3-ft salmon, drive to Yakima & watch Yankees beat RedSox in game 7
(11 innings) at Jacksons Sports Bar, camp at Clear Lake on Hwy 12
10/17 Mt Rainier NP, Wonderland Trail from Box Canyon, hike 3100-5200' elev and wet snow, stops at Paradise, Narada Falls, Christine
Falls, good dinner at National Park Inn, camp at Ike Kinswa SP
10/18 Mount St Helens National Volcanic Monument, meet Julie & Tim at Visitor Centor by I-5, breakfast in Toutle, drive to Johnston Ridge Observatory, impressive movie & exhibits, hike to Harry's Ridge, 8 very windy miles, great views of the mountain & Spirit Lake
