Kilauea VC, Chain of Craters Rd, 1-mi hike to end of road then lava trail, look back on lava flowing into ocean, Holei Sea Arch, lunch at Lava Rock in Volcano, drive up Mauna Kea, short hike to peak at 13,796', observatories, long drive out west side of Saddle Rd then south thru Kona to Hookena County CG, eat at CG, many cats

Hawaii Trip, Maui fly to Kahului, TJ&T early flight via Honolulu, J&T do laundry, lunch at Subway, shopping in Pukulani, Haleakala NP, Hosmer Grove CG, VC & wilderness orientation, drive to peak, back down for dinner at Royal King Chinese after fruitless search for Cow Palace

Tom sees sunrise on peak with hundreds of tourists & cyclists, Halemauu Trail, backpack to Holau campsites, lots of nene, 7-mile afternoon hike - Silversword Loop, Pele's Paint Pot, Bottomless Pit, Kapalaoa Cabin, Pele's Pig Pen; chat with NP sanitation worker with horse & mule, noisy petrels come & go during night

hike out Sliding Sands Trail with Tom, 3000' gain, see one Silversword in bloom, too many horses on trail, J&T back out Halemauu Tr & meet us at upper VC, expensive lunch at Kula Lodge, Kanaha Beach CG, permit checks, dinner at Manana Garage

breakfast at Charley's in Paia, 2-hr drive to Hana & Ohea Gulch in HNP, Waimoku Falls Trail, lots of waterfalls, find good swimming hole on way back, also visit crowded Seven Sacred Pools near ocean, dinner at Marco's Italian in Kahului
