8/28-30 Sierra Backpack prep, ride up with Ed in Honda, Sage Flat CG, short
hike to Big Pine Creek Falls, warm & pleasant
29: Bishop for breakfast, pick up permit, drive to Laws RR Museum &
South Lake, walk across dam, visit Ken Olson, afternoon in camp
reading War & Peace plus sudokus, Larry arrives
30: Ziv arrives, hike up South Fork Big Pine Creek to Brainerd Lake,
rain, some thunder, L&Z go to Finger & Willow Lakes, 9mi, 2700', Neal

8/31-9/5 Eighth Annual Sierra Backpack, North Fork Big Pine Creek, 30 cars
with broken windshields at trailhead lot, find sleeping Tom, sheriff
arrives, wind picks up all day, many on trail, base camp at Third
Lake, 5.5mi, 2600', cold & very windy, wear down jacket, bed at 7pm,
wind decreases after 9
9/1: beautiful day, lake loop, 4th & 5th Lakes, cross-country to 6th
& 7th Lakes, T&Z climb to Payne L near 11818, back on trail to Summit
L & lunch, XC to Black L, back to camp via 4th L, 8mi, 1800'
2: Palisades Glacier, Sam Mack Meadow, group splits at 11600', Ed
heads down, up to right to lake & glacier view at 12200', others go
left, walkie-talkie check-ins, boulder fields, hiker with beagle on
leash, T&Z down drainage to SMM where we regroup, 5mi, 1900'
3: Jigsaw Pass 12650 (L,T&Z) to Aperture Pk 13265 (T), turn back with
E&N above 5th L, Summit L, back to Black L for lunch, loop down to
1st & 2nd Lakes, spot just setting crescent moon
4: Contact Pass (L&Z), T&N pack out, Ed joins them to 1st L, start
across 2nd L boulder field but turn back after 15m, meet Ed at camp,
up west side trail at 4th L to old sign, lunch at 4th L overlook,
walkie-talkies good, bring binoculars, noisy Clark's nutcrakers at
dawn & dusk, sunny & cloudless whole time
5: pack out, check out dam & shaft at 2nd L, out by 11, hear of White
Mtn VC arson & Barcroft vandalism, home at 7:20
