10/03/2010 Mt Adams, second highest peak in Washington at 12,276 feet, climb with Peter 6700 feet 12 miles. This is the most vertical I have done in a day. It took us 12 and half hours to do the climb from the South Climb trailhead. The conditions were good with hard pack snow. The weather was mostly cloudy. The top was very windy and cold. There were only 3 other people on the peak that day which is much less than we expected. Slideshow

Larry's log:
Ed Legerton, Neal Matthys, Ziv Horesh, John Strauch, Tom Strauch and I did a backpack trip from the Green Creek trailhead to the Virginia Lake Trailhead. This is near Bridgeport. On Friday the 3rd of September I drove up to Virginia Lake and camped the night with Ed and John at the Trumbull Lake campground. A very nice campground in a neat location. Next morning we drove into Bridgeport for breakfast and to pick up our permit. To fill the rest of the day we located a few Tara Caches with John, had lunch in Lee Vining and checked out the new visitor Center at Mono Lake. A very nice visitor center. Ziv and Neal arrived at the campground this evening and we had dinner at the Cafe. Sunday morning we met Tom at the trail head, had our last good breakfast at the cafe and headed to the Green Creek Trailhead. We packed up past Green Lake and on to East Lake were we made camp. We planned to spend three nights here. Lots of other backpackers at the lake, but we still found a nice camp location right on the lake. Monday we awoke to a beautiful clear day. Today we hiked back down to Green Lake and then up Glines Canyon to Virginia Pass. From the pass we had great views into Yosemite NP. The pass is on the north eastern border of Yosemite. We were overlooking Return Canyon, Return Lake and Grey Butte. This was significant to me and Ziv because we planned to stay two nights at Summit Lake so we could hike down into Return Canyon and climb to Return Lake, Climb Grey Butte and possibly visit Soldier Lake. The others would spend one night at Summit Lake and then hike out over Summit Pass. Tom decided to climb Camiaca Peak from the pass and then try to make his way over to Gabbro Peak and then down to East Lake. The previous evening while climbing the ridge east of East Lake Ziv and I had noticed a trail climbing up around the east face of the peak to a bowl between Gabbro and Page Peaks and then up to the ridge dropping off the West of Gabbro Peak. Tom planned to take that trail down from Gabbro. This was a little more adventure than the rest of us wanted, but normal for Tom. Tom did complete the route climbing both peaks. When we arived back at camp we were pleased to see that all the other backpackers had packed out, we now had the lake to ourselves and the rest of the trip we would see very few other packers. Monday evening the wind began to blow and it gusted all night. In the morning Neal decided to hike back out to Green Creek because once again the altitude was getting to him. After parting with Neal at the Green Lake trail junction we all headed on up to West Lake. The wind was now howling. You had to pay attention to keep from getting blown off the trail. The wind at West Lake was very strong. You had to lean into it to keep from being blown over. Ed and John deiced to turn around here and head back to camp since the climb to Par Value Lakes would be a talus scramble. Tom, Ziv and I continued on up a chute to Par Value Lakes. A very pretty lake. Near the lake was an abandoned backpack with no backpacker in sight. After lunch at Par Value Lake I decided to head on down while Ziv and Tom continued on a loop to pick up Bergona Lake. My hip had been bothering me so I didn't want to over do it and the slope below Bergona Lake that they would have to descend to get back down to West Lake looked very steep to me. We never did see who that backpack belonged to. The wind continued to blow thru Tuesday night. Wednesday morning Ziv announced that he did not sleep at all during the night and was not having fun. He planned on hiking out to Green Creek Trailhead where his vehicle was parked. Problem was my shoes and a sweatshirt were in his vehicle, and I was not ready to call it quits. Today was our day to move camp from East Lake to Summit Lake. My plan was to hike to Hoover Lake before making a decision. If it was still blowing then I would onsider camping at Hoover Lakes instead of up on Summit where it would surely be really blowing, and if the weather was really threatening I would hike over Summit Pass to my truck at the Virginia Lake Trailhead. Everyone else had decided that they were hiking out today over Summit pass since there vehicles were parked there. Ziv relented and decided to join everyone and go over Summit Pass and get a ride from me to his vehicle if I hiked out, or with Tom if I decided to stay at Hoover or Summit Lake. The weather continued to deteriorate thru the morning. When I reached Hoover Lakes the wind was howling and every once in a while you would get pelted with a fleck of snow. So I decided to hike out over Summit pass with everyone. I was wearing a t-shirt, wool shirt, sweatshirt, and pea cap while carrying a full pack, and I was just comfortable. I occasionally would unzip the sweatshirt while climbing the steep trail sections but as soon as the trail leveled off would zip it back up. During the climb from Hoover Lakes to the pass and down the other side I never once unzipped the sweatshirt. As we descended the eastern side of the pass the snow frequency continued to increase and was coming down pretty good by the time we reached the trail head.
