08/12-31/2011 Hike in Zion National Park with Tom T the day before going to Lee's Ferry; my fifth time down the Colorado River on a raft thru the Grand Canyon with Holly, Sam S, Sam B, Tom T, Chris, Tim and George. Slideshow

Thursday 8/11 - 8pm Tom T and me drive thru the night to Cedar City, UT. Tom T gets pulled over by cop in Nevada. Treats us like criminals but does not give us a ticket.
Friday 8/12 - 6 mile hike with Tom T on the Taylor Creek trail in Kolob Canyon, Zion National Park. Stay at a hotel near Cedar City.
Saturday 8/13 - Got to Lee's Ferry at noon; Gang arrived at 3pm with gear and we started to rig the boats. Pretty much done by 7:30pm and we moved the boats down to the campsite. 5 of us ate dinner at Marble Canyon Lodge.

Sunday 8/14 - Breakfast at George's truck in the parking lot. Jeff, the River Ranger, gave us a talk from 9 to 10am. River running at 25,000 cfs which is much higher than last two trips (10k cfs). Leave soon after that. Did hike #5 Sheer Wall and then camped at Hot Na Na mile 16.7. Holly and I do first dinner.
Monday 8/15 - Sam S, Sam B, Tom T and Tim and me do hike #6 Rider Canyon. Camp at Silver Grotto mile 29.3. Sam S and Holly make it into the grotto.
Tuesday 8/16 - Fill two 8 gallon water containers at Vasey's Paradise. Lunch at Redwall Cavern. Holly and George do first kayaking then Sam B does too. Nantiloid Canyon hike #15. Explore Marble Canyon Dam tunnels. Camp at Lower Buck Farm mile 41.2.
Wednesday 8/17 - 5:30am hike up Buck Farm Canyon #17. Short hike #18 to Bert Louper's boat. Nankoweap Grainery hike #21. Camp mile 56.2 Malgosa. Sam B flipped twcie on the kayak and Holly once.
Thursday 8/18 - Early hike up Malgosa Canyon #24 after breakfast. Sam B and George flip kayak. Swim on Little Colorado and short hike to cabin on other side of creek. Creek brown but it does not make Colorado brown. Camp at Upper Unkar 72.4.
Friday 8/19 - All day hike up Unkar Creek #32 with Sam B, Tim, Tom T and me. Steaks for dinner.
Saturday 8/20 - Run first major rapids and go to Phantom Ranch. Call Laura from pay phone. Good lemonade as usual. Run Horn Creek with no scouting and no problem. Camp at Granite mile 93.8.

Sunday 8/21 - Monument Creek hike #40 went up wrong canyon but cut over to right drainage on way back. Run Crystal no problem, easy sneak on the right. Shinumo Creek Falls good swim spot late afternoon. Camp at mile 112.8 Waltenburg.
Monday 8/22 - Elves Chasm for most of the morning. Short stop at Doll House. Blacktail hike #48. Camp at Below Bedrock 131.7.
Tuesday 8/23 - Christmas Tree Cave. Pump water at Tapeats but no Thunder River hike (too hot). Swim at Deer Creek hike #55. Camp at Above Olo 145.9 and sit in chairs in the river for dinner.
Wednesday 8/24 - Matkatamiba most of the day hike #59. Camp at Upper Ledges 151.9.
Thursday 8/25 - All day hike to Beaver Falls #61 on Havasu Creek. Could not find Green Room but swimming was great. Camp at Tuckup 165.1.
Friday 8/26 - Ran Lava with easy sneak to the left. Camp at mile 186.4.
Saturday 8/27 - Tim and Sam S left in raft at 6:30am so Sam S could helicopter out from Whitmore Helipad. One mile hike to the Whitmore Rim #71. Nice views of the river and canyon. Camp at Indian Camp mile 207.

Sunday 8/28 - George begged for ice from commercial trip. They made him swim for the ice. Camp at mile 220.
Monday 8/29 - Missed Travertine Canyon but did stop at Travertine Falls. Camp at Surprise Canyon mile 248.8.
Tuesday 8/30 - No rapids. Did floating lunch with three boats tied together. Camp at mile 279.
Wednesday 8/31 - Take out at Pearce's Ferry. Big newly formed 10 rapid half mile down. REO shuttles car to us a little before 10:30am. We are out of there a little after 11am. Fried chicken lunch in windy picnic spot. Drop Holly and Tim at Vegas airport. Dinner with Cathy, Bette, John and Joel in Newport Beach. Sam B leaves with John and Bette for San Diego. Tom T and me leave for Salem and Seattle. Get home about 12:30pm.
