7/14&22&28&8/20-22&25/2017 Laura's 68th birthday; Dog Mountain hike 9 miles 2800 feet in the Gorge with Sharon, wet and foggy on top; Stalhman Point hike 4 miles 2000 feet above Detroit Lake; Total Eclipse weekend in Salem with perfect weather for viewing the eclipse plus a bonus family volleyball game in Sunnyslope Park near our house with Aaron, Addy, Elizabeth, Julie, Tim L, Kelsey, Jeff, Janet and Tim S; Cape Lookout hike 5 miles 900 feet with Holly, Aaron, Addy, Elizabeth, Julie, Tim L, Kelsey, Jeff, Janet and Tim S; Dinner out with everyone at Pelican Pub and Brewery in Pacific City on the coast after the hike; Iron Mountain hike 5 miles 1400 feet, smoky from all the fires. 6/30-7/3/2017 34th Annual Backpack Steens Mountain in southeast Oregon with Aaron, Addy, Elizabeth, Julie, Tim L, DA, Jean, Tim S and John; What was supposed to be an easier kid backpack turned out to be a tough backpack with obstacles every day but everyone did great and made it thru the whole loop; All met at Fish Lake campground Thursday night 10 miles from trailhead; Brief stop at Kiger Gorge which is a spectacular deep glacial gorge; Congrats to Julie for getting her 100 hike tee-shirt from John; Starting at the summit at 9,500 feet we had to get around some large snow fields, the second day bad sage brush bushwhacking and the third day 2,200 feet elevation gain on steep slopes with no trail and full backpacks; first night camp at Wildhorse Lake at 8,400 feet, second night at the confluence of Wildhorse Creek and Little Wildhorse Creek at 6,800 feet and last night at Little Wildhorse Lake at 8,900 feet.
