Tom's Log

Tuesday 9/4 Tom left Salem 1030am driving 13 1/2 hours to trailhead in Sequoia National Park arriving at midnight smoky most of the way.
Wednesday 9/5 Met Larry, Leslie, Afra, Mark and Ted at Eagle trailhead. Larry day hiked to Farewell Gap (10,600) but decided not to do Vandever Mt because of weather. The rest of us backpacked to Franklin Lake 6 miles 2800 feet. After setting up camp, it rained for an hour so we crawled in our tents and came out after the rain stopped for dinner.
Thursday 9/6 Backpacked up to Franklin pass (11,700), dropped our packs and climbed Florence Peak (12,450) except for Leslie who stayed at the pass and read Tom's Game of Thrones book. Camped at a very nice spot on Forester Lake total of 9 miles 2100 feet.
Friday 9/7 Backpacked to junction up to Big Five Lakes 7.1 miles in Lost Creek Canyon. Ted and Afra hiked up Rad Peak (11,900) from shoulder above Little Claire Lake while the rest went on. We had our one night with a campfire since we were below 10,000 feet.
Saturday 9/8 Day hiked up to Big Five Lakes, went swimming and Ted and Leslie hiked up to the two upper lakes while the rest of us backpacked to our campsite in Lost Creek Canyon right before the climb up to Columbine Lake.
Sunday 9/9 Ted got up early to hike up Sawtooth Peak (12,200), Afra and Tom left at 7am for Columbine Lake and Sawtooth Pass (11,700) arriving at Moraine Lake at 10:50am where everyone was meeting Ted except for Tom. Tom continued hiking out getting to the Timber Gap trailhead 1:30pm. Drove back north on I-5 but I-5 was closed north of Redding because of fires so took a 110 mile detour on 299 and 89. Accident on the detour so stopped dead for an hour. Got home at 5am instead of 2am.
